The artists of Mexico Abroad invited the neighbourhood to help create this year's el Dia de los Muertos panel at Side Space on the afternoons of Saturday and Sunday, October 20 & 21. The panel is a mosaic image created of corn and seeds, and is great fun to do collectively.
The celebration comes from ages nobody remembers. Once a year in Mexico, people with family members who have passed to the spirit world await the return of loved ones. On November 1, death does not evoke loss, but rather that strange wandering that all life yearns for. Altars are built in homes and in public, often incorporating the marigold flower, to welcome back loved ones and to celebrate and honour the spirit world.
