The paintings of Nomi Drory and Gwyn Jones
January 25 – February 28, 2008

Our interior map of experience is comprised of natural conditions, built environment and culture. Over time we accumulate attachments to a variety of places. The paintings of both Nomi Drory and Gwyn Jones create a sense of a place without it being a particular place, an environment that rather than being concrete and specific inhabits the realm of association and memory, and connects to one’s unconscious experience of places. Nomi Drory attempts to reconcile disparate times and places in one image. Gwyn Jones often considers the figure, which can only be understood within his/her environment, and explores the poignant gesture towards transcendence.
As we gaze into the vast distance of time and space in these paintings we are compelled to contemplate a sense of place, and one’s place in it.
